Joseph Stalin
Joseph Stalin was born on December 18th 1879. He was
a man of great power and strength and devoted most of his life to his
dictatorship. He was born in Russia and at a young age, joined a secret group that
supported freedom from the Russian government. Ideas were shared of Karl Marx
and Vladmir Lenin. The writings were studied and admired by the secret society.
The next year, following his addition to the group, Stalin removed himself and
started supporting revolutionary movements. He called meetings, organized
revolutionary movements and strikes. He was basically the mind behind the
revolutionary movements to promote freedom from Russian power. During these
movements, the Russian revolution was taking place and Vladmir Lenin was coming
to power with the Bolsheviks. Communists were leading Russia and Stalin’s
devotion to communist ideas, and devotion to revolution led him to be elected
general secretary of the Communist party in Russia. Here, Stalin started to gain
support and established his base for the future. After Lenin's death, in 1924,
Stalin set out to destroy the old party leadership and take total control. He
constructed a vast reign of terror in which all individuals that did not support
the communist ideas or were counter revolutionary, were killed. He ignored the
Bolshevik agrarian policy by taking land from the peasants forced them back into
serfdom. Stalin believed that serfdom would initiate growth and prosper in
Russia’s food productivity. This was very aggravating to the peasants and they
refused to work for the state and losing their land.Having heard
this, Stalin soon started industrialization movements and lead Russia into an
industrial age of prosperity. However, millions were killed in violent labor and
environmental issues were faced.
War was upon the Soviet state and
Stalin was threatened my Aldof Hitler’s armies in Germany coming to attack. Once
WWII began, Russia was suffering greatly. The Soviet’s army was not prepared and
Stalin was in distress. Stalin’s main enemy was Nazi Germany and targeted their
country despite the non-aggression pact they previously signed. After Germany’s
invasion in 1941 the Soviet Union became part of the Grand Alliance and demanded
to open a second front on Germany. Soviet troops were up and running and
liberating countries in Europe. All Stalin hoped for now was control of Germany.
He hoped that introducing a blockade on Berlin would prevent Germany from
succeeding in the war and take control of Berlin, however they were able to
avoid the blockade by using airlifts and supplying the city with necessities.
This forced Stalin to back down. Once the U.S. entered the war, things got much
worse for the Soviet Union because the U.S. was highly mobilized and powerful.
However, after WWII, the Soviet Union entered the nuclear age and ruled over an
empire that included most of Eastern Europe.
Even though Stalin did not achieve all of his goals, he was still able to lead a communist country and
succeed in a war to gain territory and strengthen Russia as a unified world power.
